St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner and so I thought I’d share this fun Leprechaun Bait recipe that Arjun and I made this afternoon.
If you aren’t familiar with the legends surrounding leprechauns, that’s okay. They’re sneaky little creatures and chances are you’ve never even seen one. In fact, they’re very smart and very, very hard to catch.
But on the night before St. Patrick’s Day if you build a trap, engineer it just right and use the most delicious bait, the Luck of the Irish may be with you! You may find yourself nose-to-nose with a cheeky little leprechaun come morning.
If you are one of the lucky few to catch the elusive leprechaun, you can expect to be given gold coins or maybe even have 3 wishes granted in exchange for their freedom, but be warned! Leprechauns are very mischievous!
Arjun and I had a lot of fun making the leprechaun bait. We even made a video! (I’ll post it as soon as I can, I’m having some trouble uploading it here) My grandpa was Irish and very proud of his heritage, so this is a little thing that reminds me so much of him. He would have loved this!
I’m also so happy that Arjun is finally beginning to show interest in cooking. He had absolutely no desire to help me do anything in the kitchen until just a few weeks ago. Now he wants to do everything. He has even been unloading the dishwasher! Amazing. (I’m enjoying it while it lasts…)

Because he’s shown such an interest lately, I thought it was time to upgrade his cooking tools. We stopped by a local shop and picked him up his very own (plastic) knife set. I also gave him his own Epicurean cutting board. They are my absolute favorite–and made in Minnesota, too!
(Next week I’ll probably be complaining that he wants nothing to do with me…3 year olds are moody!)
Arjun can’t wait to use his fancy leprechaun bait in his trap, he has high hopes that he’ll successfully catch one! We even packaged it up and shared it with our family for my nephew’s birthday last night. People loved it, so I’m positive those sneaky little leprechauns will also be tempted…☘😜
Do you do anything special for St. Patrick’s Day?

[recipe title=”Chex Cereal St. Patrick’s Day Leprechaun Bait Recipe ” servings=”18″ cook time=”15 minutes” difficulty=”easy”]
This is a classic recipe for Chex “Muddy Buddies” or “Puppy Chow” with a few additions to fancy it up for St. Patrick’s Day
Ingredients:
- 9 cups Chex Cereal (I used Rice Chex)
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/2 cup smooth peanut butter
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 tbsp. green sprinkles
- 1 cup mixed green and orange M&M’s
- chopped pistachios, optional
Directions:
- Measure the cereal into a large bowl and set aside.
- In a microwave-safe bowl add the chocolate chips, butter and peanut butter. Heat, uncovered, on HIGH for 1 minute. Stir. Microwave another 20 seconds, or until the mixture can be well combined and stirred smooth.
- Add vanilla to the chocolate mixture and stir to combine.
- Pour the mixture into the cereal and stir until the cereal is coated evenly. Then transfer the mixture to a large ziplock bag (at least 2 gallon). Add the green sprinkles to the powdered sugar and pour into the bag.
- Seal the bag and shake it until everything is coated with the sugar.
- Dump your Leprechaun Bait into a large bowl or sheet pan and add the M&M’s and pistachios (if using). Stir to mix.
- Store in an airtight container until you’re ready to catch your leprechaun. May the luck of the Irish be with you! 🍀🍀🍀
Notes:
- Feel free to add in any additional sweet or salty treats.
